Every year in Italy about 350,000 tons of tires arrive at the end of their life, becoming ELT (End of Life Tires). The environmental legislation forbids the transfer to landfills and imposes, on the contrary, that they be recovered. In particular, Legislative Decree 152 of 3 April 2006 has introduced the criterion of extended producer responsibility (Producer responsibility).

ELT: IN OTHER WORDS
END of LIFE TIRES
END of LIFE TIRES
It means that producers and dealers are required to manage the amount of ELT equal to the tires placed on the national market, calculated with the previous year. Among the legal obligations, including those to carry out research, development and training activities. But how can a tire be recovered at the end of life? There are two solutions.

GREENTIRE’S CHOICE:
MATERIAL RECYCLING
MATERIAL RECYCLING
An ELT can be used as fuel, or as resource from which to recover materials useful to make new objects. Greentire has always privileged this second option and ensures that rubber, textile fibers and metal are launched to reuse. The applications are numerous: special asphalts or bitumens, artificial grass soccer fields, athletics tracks, kids’playground areas, street furniture and much more.
Burning End of Life Tires for energy production, if it happens in normal plants, is legal. But Greentire’s choice is to take this way into consideration only in the last and residual instance. Almost all of PFUs withdrawn from Greentire are managed to recover materials, a result possible thanks to an experience that has convinced a growing number of partners to share this sustainability choice.

WHEN DOES A TIRE
BECOME WASTE?
BECOME WASTE?
Even if it is no longer usable on the road, the role of a tire is not concluded. When it’s not possible to rebuild the tread, or if the vehicle having them is started to demolition, they become End of Life Tires, or ELTs. It’s the start of a cycle that will lead them to become something very different from waste.
The ELTs are picked up and leave the activities where they were produced: tire dealers, sellers, workshops and service stations authorized to replacement of tires. They are then deposited in temporary storage areas and finally transferred to the consortia responsible for their management. The entire cycle is financed by the environmental contribution, paid through the purchase of new tires.
